Jazzin’ on Jefferson first shut down the streets in 2004 to bring jazz, blues, food,
arts and crafts, and other activities to Detroit’s lower Eastside. Since that time
it has grown to a two-day long event that draws over 18,000 people. This event brings
the community together to celebrate the rich history of the neighborhood and highlight
the work that is being done to create its future. Jazzin’ on Jefferson features a number
of local and national artists. Past headliners include Marcus Belgrave, Eddie Bo & the
Motor City All-Stars featuring Johnnie Basset, Robert Bradley’s Blackwater Surprise,
Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Lonnie Brooks Blues Band.
Jazzin’ on Jefferson is produced by the
Jefferson East Business Association,
a 501©3 non-profit that focuses on improving
the quality of life on Detroit’s lower Eastside by addressing the needs of the
business and residential community. JEBA uses proceeds from the festival to support
important programming such as business assistance, façade improvement programs, clean
and safe initiatives, and other activities to promote the district. To learn more about

Highlights from the 2007 Jazzin’ on Jefferson
All three stages
were alive with excitement and the arts over the two-day festival. Main stage headliners
include Marcus Belgrave and Eddie Bo & the Motor City All Stars featuring Johnnie Bassett.
The lively crowd was up on its feet dancing and enjoying the rich music set against the
historic background of East Jefferson Avenue.
The street was lined with vendors selling a diverse selection of products.
Festival goers could not resist the delicious food sold by over 15 vendors.
The selection was bigger than ever and included ribs, fish and chips, pad thai,
hot dogs, corned beef, gyros and other mouth watering dishes and sides.
Jazzin’ on Jefferson is truly an event for all ages and Hope Community
Church and Gallery 555 provided the younger crowd with engaging and fun
activities including coloring and painting..
In addition to entertaining patrons, the festival provided them with an opportunity
to learn what other organizations are doing to improve the area. These organizations
included LISC’s Far Eastside/Lower Eastside SIA tent, Detroit Synergy Group, Recycle
Detroit, Cityscape, Preservation Wayne, and Transit Riders United.
New this
year was the Jefferson East Business Association’s Historic Jefferson East Property Open House. The
Open House featured both historic and available commercial spaces within the district. For more
information about the tour and properties that are currently available,
contact Robin Duncan rduncan@jeffersoneast.org or 313.331.7939.
For the first time this year, JEBA hosted June on Jefferson. This new event series
took place the first three Saturdays in June and works to draw attention and visitors
to East Jefferson the entire month of June. This year's events were a three part
outdoor movie series – Sunset Cinema – which included showings of DreamGirls,
Happy Feet and The Goonies.
